Nizamabad-Azamgarh is known for its Black Pottery. According to mythological beliefs, the feudal rulers, influenced by the Persian style, had called artisans to live in this city to make utensils, fruits. Later, talented artisans discovered the technique of adding black color through ash and smoke, which brought fame to this craft. The clay molds and utensils are washed with vegetable powder and rubbed with mustard oil.
According to the local people, the Prajapati community has been making this pottery since the beginning. The utensils are washed with a mud slip made of Kabeez or mango bark, bamboo leaves and aarush or adhatoda leaves and then rubbed with mustard oil before firing, after which it gives a shiny and smooth finishing to the utensils and Also protects the surface from scratches.
